Design heroes: Charles and Ray Eames

We love Eames!

The Gifted Few was set up around an appreciation of classic design that is accessible to all; an ethos shared by Eames. In fact, our company name was inspired by a quote from Charles himself:

“Eventually everything connects — people, ideas, objects…the quality of the connections is the key to quality per se…I don’t believe in this ‘gifted few’ concept, just in people doing things they are really interested in doing. They have a way of getting good at whatever it is.”

But why do we love the Eames couple so much? As well as sharing their values and philosophy, we will never tire of their beautiful and timeless designs. A lot of the designs were first registered under Charles’ name, but over the years it’s become apparent that his wife Ray was also involved with a number of the pieces so we’ll give the both the credit here.

Using new technologies and materials such as fiberglass, plastic and wire mesh, they were extremely innovative in their ways of working and designs. Many of their designs have become iconic – just look at their lounge chair and ottoman, or the DAW plastic chair; even if you’ve never heard of Charles and Ray Eames or know much about design, you are still likely to be familiar with the shapes of these famous items. Such designs were ground-breaking at the time and have set the benchmark for other designers. And while setting the benchmark for and inspiring other designers is one thing, blatant copying is in a completely different ballpark.

There are lots of copycat products out there and while they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, selling ‘knock off’ designs is an issue we take a strong stance on here at The Gifted Few. Such activity damages the whole industry; it results in designers receiving no money and devalues real talent and skill. But that’s enough of a rant on that topic for now.

Do you love Charles and Ray Eames as much as we do? Is your home a shrine to their designs? Send us a photo – we’d love to see!
